Heero Yuy
Chapter One - Duplicity
Flashback: L1 Colony / Victoria Base

Space.

As vast as the word sounds, it cannot contain the sheer true nature of the void where the planets hang suspended. The human mind is incapable of wrapping itself around the notion of the size of space. It's like asking yourself where God came from. The very idea is beyond human reasoning. And yet, we continue on through life. We try not to think about the unfathomable and attempt to maintain our own tiny, insignificant niche in the universe. Violently, if necessary.

How little we are. How small we've become. How selfish we act.

I sit here, hoping to live, working for my ideal, believing myself to be true. The ultimate truth.

As I do so, is there not someone else who feels as I do? Who's hoping to live, working for his ideal, and believing himself to be true? His own ultimate truth?

And isn't peace, by it's very nature, drenched in blood?

Thus begins the duplicity of mankind. Truth and falsehood. Love and hate. Peace and war. Friend and enemy. Good and evil. There are no absolutes. There are no easy answers. All that exists is gray area. A lie can easily become the truth if the truth isn't known. The most passionate love can be skewed into the hottest of hate. War cannot exist without peace, and peace holds a veil of complacence over the next war. My friend can easily become my enemy, and my enemy can just as easily become my friend. There is no good without evil, and evil can easily be cloaked as good.

I know that intimately. For I am the god of War.

You may scoff, or think I'm insane. The fact is, it's true. In a short time, the god of War will descend upon the earth and blanket it with bolts of cleansing deadly light. With the god of Death as my comrade, I will rule over everything. Myself and my ultimate machine of destruction.

The perfect soldier. Undeniably and unmistakably flawed.

But I can't think about that now. The only absolute is myself. My ideal, my goal.

But how will I know if my ideal is the right ideal?

And will I be able to find out before it's too late?

"He is not ready."

"We're running out of time. We can't wait for them, we have to act now."

"Ah... If we send him now-"

"We're not sending him now."

"You don't mean..."

"Yes. It's the only way."

"I... I must advice against this. We have no guarantee that he'll even be successful!"

"Either we send him or we fail."

"...This is not the way. Wars are not won this way!"

"They are now. You know what to do."

"..."

The soft clicks of his shoes echoed down the hall as he reported to the assignment officer. He was the anomaly, the oddity among the ranks. They'll probably send me somewhere remote. No matter. As long as it's a base, it doesn't matter.

He rang the door alert, and the officer inside invited him in. He walked up to the desk inside, clicked his heels together, and saluted crisply.

The tired officer behind the desk nodded his acknowledgment, and the soldier put his hands behind his back. The officer leafed through the soldier's file. "Hmm... You have quite an odd name for an OZ soldier. Are you from the colonies?"

"No, sir. Born on Earth."

The officer nodded as he confirmed this with information from the file. "I see." He looked up at the soldier, then said, "Perhaps because you look like him."

"I've been told that, sir. Frankly, I don't see a resemblance."

The officer laughed as the soldier remained stoic. Feeling suddenly foolish in front of his subordinate, the officer cleared his throat and looked back at the file. "So... Cadet Heero Yuy. You've passed the OZ trials with flying colors. You'll be assigned to..." He turned to the console on his desk and called up the assignment rosters. "...Corsica Base. Your transport leaves at 0900 hours tomorrow, so be prepared."

"Yes, sir."

"I bet you'll miss Victoria Base, eh?"

"Victoria Base was merely an educational experience, sir."

The officer looked up again at the soldier. Absolutely no expression were revealed in his cobalt blue eyes. Slowly, he said, "Very well... Dismissed"

Another salute, then the soldier turned on his heel and left the office.

At 0910 hours, the transport took off from Victoria Base. Heero wasn't alone on the flight, but he still stayed to himself. He looked out the window as they passed over Lake Victoria, speeding away toward Corsica. As he stared down into the dark waters, he imagined he could see a pair of huge wings deep beneath the surface.

It's only a matter of time now... we'll meet again... I promise.
